Permanent Ephemera! is a collection of Broadsides meant to be saved and cherished. The focus of  this show is on story telling, beyond that the subject matter is open. Send us your artwork!

This show is open to all artists working in any printmaking media. Check out the details of this exhibition below and send us your work.

This is a combination art show and exchange. Please see details carefully since this show is a bit different than our previous exchanges.

How it Works!

Permanent Ephemera! is an art show and exchange. Each artist will send three prints.

• 1st print is for the archive - We keep one and store it for posterity.
• 2nd print is for sale in the show -  We try to sell it and give you your share.
• 3rd print is for the exchange - We trade one of your prints with a print by another artist and send it back to you.

At the end of the show, you will get back your print or a check and a print by another artist. Those are the basics. Sign up and send us your Broadsides.

Two big shows . . . This Month

I am pleased to announce that my Art will be shown in two locations this month. I have work on display at Creative Framing in Oakland and at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts in Alameda.

My art buddy, Heather Piazza and I will be participating in the ProArts East Bay Open Studios event this weekend (June 7-8th) and next (June 14-15th). Both Heather and I will be at the Gallery from 11:00 to 6:00 all four days. The artwork will be up the entire month of June. Additionally, I have three prints hanging at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts as part of the 'Schisms' show which runs through June. We have also been working diligently on Four Oceans Press Hand-Pulled Print & Photography Exchanges. We have opportunities for many artists to participate and are actively seeking more artists to get involved in the Artistic community we are creating. We are nearing completion of our Third Hand-Pulled Print Exchange – Spring. We are in the middle of two more Print Exchanges & our first Fine Arts Photography exchange.

Four Oceans Press - Winter Print

This is my finished print for the Four Oceans Press Winter Print Exchange. I actually finished it a while ago, but I am behind on posting and other computer related things since I was sick for most of February.

I have three prints including this one in a show at the The Frank Bette Center for the Arts. The show is opening Friday March 7th, 7 - 9 pm in Alameda, California.

This is the beginning of another Man sculpture. I have had the idea for a while. I want to do several different versions and play around with the ideas I started working with in earlier sculptures. In Hang, (see below) I was trying to show the figure from the inside as well as the outside - at the same time. I posed him upside-down and bound to the wood backing to elude to the idea that we all tie ourselves up with things and are bound in some way. I was feeling trapped at the time I created Hang. I no longer feel trapped, but I am still interested in the way we hold our selves back from things - purposefully or not...

New cards, Winter Update and a new show proposal...

I have been really busy and have a lot of News.

We ordered a new business card for Four Oceans Press that is the same layout as the old business card, but has prints instead of paintings. The prints are by the same artists– Kathe Welch, Heather Piazza & Mark Knot – and appear in the same order as on the original card.

We have added new prints to the Winter Archive on Four Oceans Press. We currently have six finished prints and two proofs. The deadline to send in the prints has just past and new prints are arriving each day. The Winter Archive page should fill up fairly quickly. If you want to see the finished Fall prints check out the Fall Archive. And of course, sign-ups are now open for the Spring Exchange and the Food Alphabet.

We have written a proposal for a ‘Four Seasons’ show. ‘Four Seasons’ will highlight the work from our exchanges at a prominent art gallery in San Francisco in August 2008. If we are selected, all of the details we will be posted here.

Fall Print Exchange Mailed out...

We - Four Oceans Press - sent out our Fall Print Exchange on Monday, January 14^th. We had to wait a long time for our last artist to send in his work. As soon as the last set of prints arrived we started collating the prints. We laid the prints out in stacks on my living room floor to make sure that each artist would receive one of each print. We put them in the same order as they are in on our Fall Archive page. It took a lot longer than we anticipated to finish the job.

Recruiting Printmakers

Last week we sent out nearly 200 copies of our call for entries for our Four Oceans Press print exchanges. Our call for entries has the same information as is on the Exchange page.

We sent out over 150 to Art Institutions in the United States and nearly 40 to international locations. We are so excited to be running this exchange and about ready to send out our First Set of Prints. The Fall prints were delayed because we had to wait for one of the artists, but they will be mailed out on Monday, January 14, 2008. These prints can be seen on our Exchange Archive.

If you are a Printer and haven't signed up yet, we think you should. Take a look at the Exchange Guidelines and sign up for Spring or the Food Exchange. Of course, if you need more time than what is listed you can sign up for a later exchange...

We are writing a proposal to get our exchange into a gallery in San Francisco in August. We will write more about that as we know more...

Spring print

This is the first color of a five color lino-cut I am working on. This is for the Four Oceans Press Spring Exchange.

I printed the first color on Tuesday and I am going to cut some tonight and hopefully print the second color.

Tomorrow is the first day of vacation and I am hoping to get alot of print in over the next two weeks. I also have to finish up Christmas shopping and do a bunch of other things...

Save this Date!

This is a picture of me from the Open Stdio Event Heather (my studio partner) and I did last June. You have to plan for these things way in advance. We made it official last night and we are committed (or should be committed) to doing the Open Studio this coming June.

It may seem ridiculous to put something on your calendar now, but our lives are so bury that is how it is these days. The event will be June 7-8 and 14-15, 2008. It will be at Heather's frame shop Creative Framing. We will announce more details as we work them out.

Heather and I have been working very hard to get Four Oceans Press off to a running start. We are about to finish our first print exchange. We both keep up our own websites and have many other draws on our attention - it may seem crazy to have added one more thing to fill up our time, but it has been well worth it. We have collected art from around the world and in the next few days we will be sending the now collated work back to the group of amazing artists who have made wonderful prints to share.

We could not have known how much work it would be, but both of us are happy to work 14 hours a day. In fact, I can safely say I think we both prefer working that hard.

There are still a few spots in the Winter Exchange. The deadline is getting close, but there is still plenty of time to pull a set of prints to share...


We have added a new section to our website - Opening Night Reviews. We go to a lot of shows and usually end up discussing them, taking pictures and meeting and talking to the artists. We created a review section to document our experiences. It adds a lot of work for us, but I think it also adds a new dimensions to our site.

Winter Proof...

This is my proof for the Four Oceans Press Winter Exchange. I will be making very minor changes and printing my edition this weekend or next. I will post the final version as soon as it is finished.

I also cut another linoleum for the Spring exchange, but I will have to post it in stages since it is a reduction print.

Last Leaf

This is my finished print for the Four Oceans Press Fall Exchange. I actually finished it a while ago but there are so many things to do - I have neglected to add this to my blog.

Last Leaf is 6" x 8" printed in water-based ink on 8.5 x 11 paper. I used my proof press to print the first few images, but I was not happy with the results I was getting, so I used a baren to print the edition. The image has a spot of green on the leaf which is hand-colored , but the rest of the image is black and white through out.

Post Card Show 2007

I am showing my book "Maps" at the Post Card Show at the Lab in San Francisco. The opening is from 6 - 9, Friday, November 30, 2007 - that's tonight. The show runs from, Nov. 30 - Dec. 8, 2007.

Maps

This is the front cover of Maps.

‘Maps’ is a hand made artist book. It is the story of how maps shape up and how maps affect our daily lives. I wrote 'Maps' while driving home from work one day and it was inspired by many road trips ‘Maps’ has 18 pages and is full of illustrations. The center page folds out into a large map. This book is hand-made in a limited edition of 200 and is currently displayed in the Post Card Show at The Lab in San Francisco.

I also posted a few things on the Four Oceans Press store on E-Bay including Maps. Mark wrote a E-Bay guide called 'How to draw a naked Guy.' - It is really about how to get started drawing and how to work with a model - but it is a catchy title.

We are still looking for artist for our two exchanges. The Winter Exchange has 13 artists so far and the Food Alphabet has 11 artists. Q, X & Z - some of the hardest letters are taken.

Winter Print Exchange

Four Oceans Press is nearing the end of our first print exchange and we are quite excited about the turn out. So far we have 13 of 25 prints in and currently on display on our permanent archive page.

We are happy to announce sign-ups for our second Hand-pulled Print exchange.


This is a simple print exchange. You print an edition of 26 hand-pulled prints in any traditional print media – Woodblock, Linoleum, Serigraph, Lithograph or Intaglio. You will have about two months to do the work and send it to us. Send the prints as soon as they are finished and dry. We will coordinate and collate the prints and return to you a pile of 25 prints from 25 different artists.

Our exchange is open to anyone who works in traditional printing media.

Alameda Literati

I will be presenting my half-way completed picture book 'The Last Monkey" at Alameda Literati, (tomorrow) Saturday, Nov. 3, at 12:00.

'The Last Monkey" is a story about my fear of falling off of the bed. The drawings are Pen & Ink. I will be showing several drawings from the book as well as reading selections and answering questions about my story making process. Several more images can be seen on my website.

Another Drawing, 'Holiday' is currently on display at the Frank Bette Center for that Arts with a few of my woodblock and Linoleum prints. 'Holiday' is part of series of twelve Calendars each with its own theme. The first Calendar - 'Month' was shown at Frank Bette in September.
